PostSubject: Live Action Adaptations of Cartoons: My Thoughts   Sun Nov 02, 2008 11:12 am

If there is one thing that angers me the most, it's when someone says that a movie "raped their childhood" I honestly cannot stand that about people. Especially when it comes to movies based on cartoons or anime.

It seems to me, all they really care about is making sure that the characters look EXACTLY like their cartoon counterparts.

WTF...doesn't anyone watch a movie for it's STORY? Since when did making sure the characters look like the cartoons become a huge factor of these types of films?

You want an example? Okay. Let's take a look at the Dragonball Z movie coming out next year. All I hear is this all day "OMG Look what they did to Piccolo!!!!"

Honestly...doesn't anyone care about the story? Why must the characters look completely accurate. With movies like the 1998 remake of "Godzilla" the reason why that failed was because "Godzilla" didn't have any of the trademarks that makes that character.

From what I've seen with all the Live Action adaptations of cartoons, almost all of the characters have their trademark characteristics with a little bit of some new material to make it more modern.

But no. That's not enough for people. Not only do they need to look like the character, they need to have the characteristics as well.

Doesn't anyone care about how ENTERTAINING a movie is!? I don't think so. That's why I'm actually going to see the Dragonball Z movie next year. Not for how accurate it is to the material...but because I want to watch an Entertaining movie.

I'll be honest, there's a few of these type of adaptations that I don't like including Garfield and a few others.

But just because there's bad ones, doesn't mean there isn't any good ones.

Personally the ones that I find to be good entertaining flicks are Casper, the two Scooby Doo movies, Transformers, and Speed Racer.

While some of the ones I listed might not be entertaining to others, I don't think that any of the adaptations they've come out with are THAT bad.

Personally, when people say "Hollywood has raped my childhood", I always think that they're exagerrating. I mean, when it comes to movies based on cartoons and anime shows, it's exactly with the case of movies based on novels, comic books, video games and tv shows. There's bound to be good movies or bad movies.

It just all depends on the execution on the idea. For example, the 1998 American Godzilla film, it sounded good on paper but the overall execution of the idea just wasn't very good. It wasn't just because that the Godzilla in the film wasn't exactly Godzilla, the story sucked and everything else did. The only thing good about the film was the soundtrack itself (Not the music score though).

The thing about the fans is that, they really want the films to be like exactly like how they remembered it when they were kids but what they don't understand is that not everyone would share the same thought. For example, a lot of fans love the original G1 Transformers cartoon but for me, I wasn't exactly impressed with the cartoon (and neither was Michael Bay actually, he admits that he couldn't stomach watching the cartoons). So, there is a reason on why they're updated for modern audiences but at the same time, the trademarks are kept.

Exactly. It's also the same when translating movies from one language to another or, in some cases, replacing an existing dub with a better one. Some fans have said that the first dubs of Ghibli's movies are superior to Disney's, but for me it turned out to be the other way around (although I WILL confess that Totoro was equally good as Disney's).

Also, the "raped my childhood" comment is downright full of fail.
